Rhinoplasty — recovery and revision

Rhinoplasty — recovery and revision

Planning for rhinoplasty

If you’re planning to get a nose job in Charlotte, start preparing now. For the weeks leading up to rhinoplasty surgery, stop smoking and don’t take aspirin. You’ll be unconscious for the procedure and won’t be able to drive home afterward, so get someone to drive you or call a cab.

The first two to three days afterward are the worst. Take your pain medication and antibiotics, and follow your surgeon’s advice on cold packs. Find something you can eat and drink plenty of fluids. Get a lot of sleep, keeping your head elevated to reduce swelling.

For the next couple of weeks, avoid pullover sweaters and other garments that brush against your nose as you dress. Take your temperature often. Don’t drink or take any aspirin for the first three weeks. Smoking interferes with blood flow and slows the healing process, so if you’re a smoker, don’t start again until the process is complete. Be sure to go to any post-operative appointments you’ve made.

Don’t do anything that might raise the blood pressure in your head, such as bending over, doing exercises or lifting anything that weighs more than five to seven pounds. If you’re worried about how the surgery turned out, wait until you’re sure the swelling has gone down before you decide.

If it didn’t come out right…

In the event that the nose job goes wrong, as it does in about one out of thirty cases, there is hope. Revision rhinoplasty is a specialized form of rhinoplasty that can correct the mistakes or accidents that sometimes happen with nose jobs. Some surgeons classify revision rhinoplasty according to the nature of the problem to be corrected, the number of grafts it will require and the number of previous surgical procedures.

The bad news is that you’ll have to wait until at least a year after the initial surgery to have the corrective surgery done. When it is done, you’ll want it to be done by the best surgeon you can find, one who makes a point of learning what you want and figures out how best to achieve it, and who has acquired expertise in revision rhinoplasty.
