Rhinoplasty — many goals, many methods

Rhinoplasty — many goals, many methods

The many uses of rhinoplasty

There are many goals a rhinoplasty patient may have in mind. You need to be clear in your mind what you’re looking for, and you need to find the most experienced rhinoplasty surgeon in the area to be sure of getting what you want.

Rhinoplasty in Charlotte NC is often used to make the nose smaller. This can be aimed at a hump on the bridge of the nose, the tip of the nose, the width of the nose, or all of the above. Only the top third of the bridge of the nose is made of nasal bone, so an operation on the bridge of the nose will most likely involve working on cartilage. In such cases, the skin on the nose needs to shrink slightly in order to fit the new nose. It is also used to correct irregularities in the septum or the tip.

In some cases, it is used to make the nose bigger — if the nose is congenitally underdeveloped, for example, or if a previous surgery has left the nose too small. This may involve using bone or cartilage transplanted from the rib, or using implants of another sort.

A lot depends on the thickness of the nasal skin. The thicker it is, the harder it is for the surgeon to achieve precise results. Men usually have thicker nasal skin than women.

How to get the most out of your nose job

Stop smoking a couple of weeks before the surgery, and get someone to drive you home from it. For the first two to three days after the procedure, take your antibiotics and follow your surgeon’s advice on cold packs. Healing burns calories, so find something you can eat and drink plenty of fluids. When you sleep, keep your head elevated to reduce swelling.

For the next couple of weeks, don’t wear clothes that press against your nose. Take your temperature often. If you smoke, don’t start smoking again until you’re done healing. Your surgeon should have advice on how to keep your blood pressure low and avoid blowing your nose until you’re healed.
