Rhinoplasty and teens

When a teen wants a nose job

The most common type of plastic surgery performed on American teenagers is rhinoplasty.  Most teens who want a nose job are unhappy with the shape or appearance of their nose.  The teen years can be difficult and add in self-consciousness about some facet of their appearance and teens can be miserable.  Dr. M. Sean Freeman, Charlotte’s top facial plastic surgeon performs more rhinoplast procedures than anyone else in Charlotte NC.  Dr. Freeman does not recommend rhinoplasty for girls younger than sixteen or for males younger than eighteen.

When a teen is considering rhinoplasty, their first step is to set up a consultation with Dr. Freeman.  Using state of the art technology, Dr. Freeman can show the teen how their new nose will appear and explain all of the details about the procedure.  Dr. Freeman will use computer imaging to help the teen envision what how their new nose will appear.  This also allows the teen to try out different shapes for their new nose until they find the one they like the best.  While most teens want to change or improve the appearance of their nose, some actually require rhinoplasty to fix a deformity or repair an injury.  No matter what the reason, when a teen is thinking about rhinoplasty, they should schedule a consultation with Dr. Freeman.

Types of rhinoplasty procedures

There are several different types of rhinoplast procedures.  These include straightening the nose’s bridge, removing a hump, reshaping the tip, making the nose smaller or bigger, decreasing or increasing the depth and size of the nostrils, opening breathing passages, or correcting injuries.  Any of these procedures are surgery, so a teen should carefully consider their reasons for wanting rhinoplasty.  Dr. Freeman will discuss all of the teen’s options, whether they are looking to repair an issue with cartilage in the nose or want to change the shape of their nose.

Before any teen decides on rhinoplasty, they should discuss the decision with both their parents and their facial plastic surgeon.  It is important that both the teen and their parents are aware of all the details, including the risks involved in rhinoplasty.  Dr. Freeman will be happy to meet with both the teen and their family to discuss everything involved in a rhinoplasty procedure.

The rhinoplasty procedure

Dr. Freeman performs rhinoplasty procedures in his fully-equipped operating suite located at The Center for Facial and Plastic Laser Surgery located in Charlotte NC.  The patient can opt for either sedation or general anesthesia, both are available at the clinic.  There is typically some bruising following a rhinoplasty, but these will disappear within a week to ten days.  Dr. Freeman’s patients normally do not need nose packing following a rhinoplasty procedure which makes recovery much more comfortable.  There may also be some numbness, but this will also abate in about a week following surgery.  Patients will also experience swelling which can last several weeks.
