Overview of Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the shape and structure of the nose. Cosmetically, this includes: the width, bumps, or depressions of the bridge; a bulbous, upturned, or drooping tip; wide or large nostrils; and overall symmetry and proportion to the rest of the face. Non-cosmetically, a nose job is a way to correct a deviated septum, which is when the airway is obstructed, causing breathing impairment. Your Charlotte, NC facial cosmetic surgeon can consult with you about the various surgical options for your nose.
Candidacy
In order to be a candidate for rhinoplasty, your nose must be finished developing, and you must be healthy, which includes a realistic goal for your procedure. While teens can have this procedure, their development usually completes in the later teen years. This varies by gender and individual.
Consultation
Before surgery, you will need to have a consultation with your surgeon. They will examine your nose, take photos of your nose for a before and after comparison, and ask you a few questions. This includes questions about your goals for the procedure and any past surgeries. You will also be asked about any medical conditions, including allergies, and any medicines and substances you are currently taking. Lastly, potential risks will be reviewed. Be sure to do some research before your consultation, and have questions ready to ask your surgeon.
Surgery
Rhinoplasty usually requires general anesthesia, though this depends on the specific procedure. In Charlotte, NC, nose jobs are typically performed at the Center for Facial Plastic and Laser Surgery, which is a state-of-the-art operative suite. The procedure is either open, meaning an incision is made across the tissue between the nostrils, called the columella, or close, meaning incisions are made inside the nose, and are not visible. Bone or cartilage may be removed. If cartilage is added, this will likely come from a cartilage graft taken from the ear in an area that will not leave a distinguishable mark. If your nostrils are operated on, there would also be incisions along the creases of the nostrils. Your surgeon will provide you with specific instructions for caring for your nose following your procedure and will schedule a follow-up meeting with you. Your Charlotte, NC specialist typically does not use nasal packing.
Recovery
Bruising lasts 7 to 10 days. Swelling usually subsides within a few weeks, although minor swelling can continue for a few months, meaning the final appearance of your nose will not be totally apparent until then.
