A nose for spring

With the return of spring (be patient — it is coming) you may be interested in a new look for yourself. A common form of facial plastic surgery is rhinoplasty, or the nose job.

The art of rhinoplasty has been steadily improving since the first nose jobs in the 6th century B.C. The procedure can do anything from reducing a hump on the bridge of the nose to altering the tip of the nose to fixing a deviated septum by reshaping the bone and cartilage underneath the skin. In about one in five cases, a rhinoplasty may come with a chin implant, to give balance to the face.

After surgery, there will probably be some swelling and bruising, and possibly skin numbness. All of these effects will go away before too long. The bruising will fade within a week to ten days, while the swelling can last for several weeks. To get an idea of what long term results to expect, look for a surgeon with a gallery of before and after rhinoplasty photographs on his or her Web site. If a rhinoplasty is performed to improve the results of a previous nose job, it is called a revision rhinoplasty. If you are considering this, you should wait for at least one year after the first rhinoplasty.
