The second most popular form of facial plastic surgery is the nose job. Common reasons for a nose job are to reduce a hump on the bridge of the nose, alter the tip of the nose or repair a broken nose. To alter the shape of the nose, the surgeon reshapes the bone and cartilage underneath the skin. To make sure there are no obvious surgical scars, the surgeon usually places the incisions of the nose job inside the nose, where no one can see them. Doctors call this a closed rhinoplasty. In some cases, the surgeon needs to make an incision in the skin covering the nose. This is called an open rhinoplasty, and the incision is usually made in the skin between the nostrils. In about one in five cases, a rhinoplasty may come with a chin implant, to give balance to the face. After surgery, there will probably be swelling and bruising. All of these effects will go away within a few weeks, or sooner.
A good rhinoplasty surgeon can look at your nose and figure out the best way to perform the surgery. With the help of computer imaging, the surgeon can show you the possible outcomes, allowing you to describe the exact results you want from the operation. Dr. M.
