Know what you want when you ask for a nose job

Scary stories of nose jobs

Googling “rhinoplasty” or “rhinoplasty news” can be an unnerving experience for those who are considering a nose job. Ninety percent of those who get nose jobs are satisfied with them, and only one in thirty nose jobs needs to be redone. Unfortunately, unhappy customers are the ones who make the news.

This is not necessarily the fault of the surgeon. Some people are pressured into cosmetic surgery by others, or go in without a clear sense of what they are hoping to receive. Others seem to get addicted to surgery, spending thousands of dollars again and again. These cases are usually reflections of psychological issues that should really be handled by a different sort of professional than a facial plastic surgeon.

Know your mind before you change your face

A change in your face is one of the biggest changes you can make, and you need to be very clear in your mind of the reasons for it. You don’t want to commit to a nose job until you’re sure you know what you want and why, and this isn’t the sort of judgment call you can make on your own. Fortunately, a facial plastic surgeon with a lot of experience can discuss the matter with you, help you decide if this is really right for you, and (using computer imaging) show you various possible outcomes and how they would look on your face.

The extent of the changes you want will determine the exact surgery that needs to be performed. Very small changes in the nose can be made using injections of hyaluronic acid filler. Larger changes require a closed rhinoplasty, in which the surgeon makes the incision inside the nostril. Making the biggest changes in the nose requires an open rhinoplasty, in which the surgeon makes the incision at the base of the nose. This means more swelling and slower healing after the surgery.
