Different noses, different rhinoplasties

Different noses, different rhinoplasties

Different nose jobs for different noses

Everyone wants a different kind of nose job. Okay, maybe this is an exaggeration — over a hundred thousand rhinoplasties are performed every year, and there aren’t that many different kinds of rhinoplasties that can be performed on the human nose. But there are many different kinds of nose, and many different reasons for wanting the nose changed. Some people have medical reasons for needing a rhinoplasty done — their nose was damaged in an accident, or they suffer from a deviated septum. But this is unusual — most nose jobs are strictly cosmetic in nature. What people want is a nose that continues to do everything it needs to do while being just the right size, shape and proportions for the face.

And what the right size, shape and proportions are depends on the face. According to a Google search, there are either six, twelve, thirteen or fourteen different kinds of nose shape, the broadest categories being “flat,” “concave,” “convex” and “straight.” One thing scientists have learned is that people whose ancestors come from cold, dry climates tend to have noses with longer, higher and narrower nostrils than those whose ancestors come from hot, humid climates, which helps them warm and humidify the air they breathe so it doesn’t damage the delicate lung tissue. There are also some gender differences — male skin is usually than female skin, and this has the effect of blunting the angles and making the nose less delicate in appearance. The bridge of a man’s nose is usually straighter and more prominent, and the tip is less elevated.

A skilled Charlotte facial plastic surgeon needs years of experience in which to learn how to perform the required surgery on every shape of nose, through every thickness and texture of skin. He or she needs to learn the different standards of beauty in different communities, and how to perform surgery to achieve those standards. He or she needs the experience to speak with many different patients and learn their hopes and expectations, and what caused them to seek out a nose job. And he or she needs to perform the surgery by making millimeter-fine adjustments in living tissue — skin, cartilage, mucous membranes and so on.
